Adapting to a New Environment

Human beings are very adaptable. We can live in most climates of the word. In the past, people tended to stay in the place they were born, but we move easily from countryside to city, from one part of a country to another and even from country to country. Each people have its own customs and ways of live, and countries also have different languages. When I moved from Gresik to Malang, I changed my behavior in three significant ways.

First, I changed my habit in reading book. Reading was not my hobby when I was. I did not have any time to read even a book. I spent almost all my time watching tv. However, it becomes my hobby since I moved in the city. Buying a book I do once a month. If I have no book or lose of material I try to borrow book from library or any one who has books which can be read. Reading becomes part of my time.

Second, I changed my language style. Customary, in my daily life I talk to another with Javanese language. Some people said that the way I talked to is unusual; they could not catch the word I talked to.
Day after day, I am accustomed to speaking with national language. It makes me easier to communicate with my friends.

Third, I changed the way I travel. In my city I got traveling from one place to another by riding motor bike. It is the easier way for me to get one place to another. However I do not stay in my city any more. I may not bring my motor bike because I do not have drive license. It will be dangerous for me. So the way I travel is catch public transportation. Public transportation is easier I get in my new city.

Am I the same person I was before or am I different now? Change makes us examine our values and habits. By changing my habit in reading book, my language style, and my way travel, I thing I may appear to others as if I am a new person. I don’t really think so, however. I prefer to think of it not so much as having changed but as having changed but as having grown.
