Today’s Activities

I have writing class today at 06.30 am. It was so early for me, but I had to do it because I had chosen it as my writing class. It was the second meeting. I thought I was late attending class because of seeing the lecturer was already in the class. But after coming in class, I just several students there and class had not started yet. Some students came after my coming. They came later than I did. Two minutes later, class was started.

The lecturer started with the question what writing was. He led students to give answering. One student raised her hand giving her opinion about what writing was and continued by another student giving their own opinion about it. After receiving some opinions, lecture gave chance for every student to give addition or comment of it. One of student is opposite with one of student’s opinion that writing is literary work. In her opinion, writing was not included I literary work. In her understanding, literary work was like a novel, poem etc. After listening her opinion, lecturer gave clear explanation that literary work was not around the novel, poem or etc, but literary work was everything that was printed. I was sure that everyone understood.

The class was going to be well. It continued by second question, what the difference between writing and speaking. Student answered, writing could be documented but speaking could not because speaking was done as direct conversation. Other student had objection, what if speaking was recorded?, yah, it was expectation.

The class runs well. It was like speaking class. The question did not always come from the lecture. He gave us change to make a question. It was students’ chance to give the question. Thirty seconds later to be silent class, no one asked for question. Then I caught a student raising her hand for question. She asked how to make confident of our writing. Lecturer led us to answer the question. So many kinds of answering that I heard.

In short, it was interesting class. I did writing class but I felt like in speaking class. We did both speaking and listening in writing class. The lecturer encouraged students to speak more even it was not speaking class. It is good for students’ process to the next step higher. The lecturer does not give the theory anymore. We are encouraged to practice what we learned directly. He motivated us to make writing as part of our life. Nice class.

I take note some points of this class today. First, writing is a skill that everyone can learn with practice. We can learn to write and master with hard work. Writing is not natural gift. Anyone has skill in it. We have to have an effort to learn to write so that become a competent writer. Don’t afraid of making mistakes. We just need to believe that writing is a process. It does not to get right all at once. It passes in steps. Second, both speaking and writing, may be for some people speaking is easier done than writing. They think in speaking they do not worry about grammar. Actually, in writing does too. They should not worry about grammar, spelling and punctuation. Just let it flow as in mind.
